Mission
Our mission is to join forces with The Massachusetts Department of Public Health and other organizations in the effort to meet the challenge of Healthy People 2010 objective to fully immunize children and adolescents in Massachusetts against vaccine preventable diseases. To do this we provide educational services to professionals and the general public, and participate in initiatives to identify, educate and immunize children and adolescents who are at high risk, under-served or underimmunized.

Ongoing Activities
We educate clinicians who administer vaccines to children on pediatric immunization.

  • Organize seminars on pediatric Immunization. Our speakers are clinicians and teachers of pediatric infectious disease and are also members of the Immunization Initiative Advisory Committee. Since the start of the program in 1995 we have organized hundreds of Grand Rounds Seminars on Pediatric Immunization in hospitals around the state.
  • Publish the ShotClock, a newsletter for the provider's community with timely clinical information about vaccines and immunization activities in Massachusetts.
  • Develop and implement methods for keeping track of all children and assist in improving of office practice strategies and tools for vaccinating children.
  • Support and assist in the development of the statewide immunization registry.
  • Cooperate with other private and public statewide and local organizations, which share the mission of reducing the burden of disease by immunizing children and adults against vaccine preventable diseases.

The Advisory Committee
The Advisory Committee meets quarterly and provides guidance to the Immunization Initiative programs. It also serves as an advisory board to the Massachusetts Immunization Program (MIP) on issues of policies, regulations and recommendations. Its membership includes physicians and nurses, DPH Immunization Program officials, and representatives from various organizations interested in improving immunization practices and rates in communities across Massachusetts.

Subcommittees of the Immunization Initiative are work groups, which meet when the Advisory Committee identifies a need for action. The current subcommittees are: Vaccine Purchasing Strategies, Immunization Registry, and Vaccine Safety.
